Conflict in the workplace is a stressful and emotional situation which affects morale, productivity, and team dynamics. Workplace mediation, as a solution, is a confidential, structured process designed to resolve disputes between colleagues, managers, or teams in a constructive, confidential and respectful way.
The process of resolving a workplace conflict is future-focused, designed to diffuse emotions, preserve relationships and improve communications. The aim is to enable a positive and calm workplace environment.
Workplace conflicts are usually managed by your HR department. Once they become aware of the conflict and your willingness to explore mediation as a means to resolve it, they will appoint a mediator to facilitate the resolution process.
The mediator reaches out to all parties to understand the nature of the conflict and make sure that mediation is the most appropriate mechanism to resolve it. They explain the process and how it works to all parties involved.
The mediator meets with each party, either in person or online, for a confidential one-to-one session. The purpose of this session is to gather individual perspectives of the parties and ensure all parties are willing to engage. It also offers the individuals involved the opportunity to freely express their thoughts and concerns in a safe environment.
The mediator will schedule a joint session. Each party has the opportunity to express their concerns and highlight the impact the conflict is having on them, without interruption. The mediator remains impartial, encouraging all parties to listen, collaborate and negotiate a solution that they are happy with and able to implement.
Once the parties have reached a negotiated agreement, the mediator drafts the Mediation Agreement for the Parties to sign. The document sets out the details of the agreement and any follow up actions needed.

Mediation is appropriate in the workplace where there is a conflict or dispute that affects working relationships, team dynamics, or productivity and where the parties are willing to resolve the issue cooperatively with the help of a neutral third party.
It is especially useful as a means to manage early-stage conflict and avoid a disruptive escalation in tension in the workplace.
Although you are not required to bring anything specific to a workplace mediation, it may be helpful to bring relevant evidence relating to the dispute, such as emails or short and factual notes on event specifics or timelines, to help articulate the issues you have experienced. Preparing notes to help you focus on what you are hoping to achieve through mediation may also be useful.
The most important thing to bring with you is an open mind and a willingness to engage.
